With changing trends the medical education needs reappraisal. Medicine across the globe has become evidence based. With the introduction of COME (Community Oriented Medical Education) and module based teaching most undergraduate medical institutes have modified their schedule accordingly.

Allama Iqbal Medical College is a rapidly progressing young institution compared to other established medical colleges in Pakistan. Yet this college over the years has not only caught up but has led the changing trends in medical education. This is now proud to have an integrated teaching curriculum in live with the teaching of modern medicine to bridge the gap between the old undergraduate style of teaching and modern post graduate training in Pakistan. The curriculum is unique and it offers integrated training and teaching in basic and clinical disciplines inline with international standards.

The delivery of medical education is a science. It requires planning, execution, monitoring & evaluation. It requires vigilant teachers and enthusiastic students. By the efforts of the Medical Education Cell, the college has a detailed curriculum of training which provides structured overview of all the five years.

Allama Iqbal Medical College possesses some of the finest brains of this country in the form of staff as well as students. Together joining hands in making this institution one of the greatest services to the People of Pakistan.

The college offers 5 year M.B.,B.S training course in affiliation with University of Health Sciences. The brief information about each academic year is given under.

First Year M.B.,B.S

 

 

Subjects

The following subjects will be taught in the first year MBBS class

  • Anatomy (Gross, Histology, General & Embryology).

  • Physiology.

  • Biochemistry.

  • Islamic Studies.

  • Pakistan Studies.

Batches

The first year MBBS class will be divided in to six batches (A.B.C.D.E & F). These batches will rotate in Biochemistry, Physiology and histology practicals according to schedule (detail will be posted on notice boards of each department).
 

Training Tenure

The tenure of first year MBBS is 33 weeks. This time period does not include holidays. The time spent in holidays, college week and other events resulting in loss of teaching period has been excluded from this curriculum. The first week will be for orientation in the form of lectures & practical demonstrations. The schedule however starts from day 1 and no repetition of topics will be carried out unless specified.
 

Lectures

The lectures schedule will be for 33 weeks. The lectures to be delivered during the year will be clearly identified.
 

Assessment

The assessment schedule for lectures, tutorials, practical and anatomical demonstrations is included in this curriculum. The internal assessment will be a certain weightage  in the Final University Exam.
 

Send-up Examination

A send up examination will be conducted at the end of the teaching year. Students who have not successfully completed any of the assessment or laboratory work, will not be allowed to appear in the send up examination and thus unable to appear in the university examination.
 

First Professional Part I
MBBS Examination.

An exam will be conducted by the university at the end of the teaching year in subjects of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Islamiat & Pakistan Studies. 

This exam will comprise of essay, MCQ's and  viva-voce.

The third year MBBS class will be divided in to three batches (X,Y & Z) for basic subjects. In clinical disciplines the class will be divided in to sixteen (16) batches (A to P). Each batch in the disciplines of Obs. & Gynae will be further subdivided into two batches (e.g. B1 & B2)
 

Training Tenure

The tenure of third year MBBS is 33 weeks of both basic & clinical teaching.  Students will spend two (2) hours each day in wards four (4) days a week. This time period does not include holidays. The time spent in holidays, college week and other events resulting in loss of teaching period has been excluded from this curriculum.

The lectures schedule will be for 33 weeks. The lectures to be delivered during the year will be clearly identified.
 

Blocks

The clinical training is divided in the form of 4 blocks

  • General Surgery.

  • Internal Medicine.

  • Surgical Sub-specialties.

  • Medical Sub-specialties.

Training tenure in
Each Block

The students of each batch will spend 8 weeks in one block. Each block consists of 4 postings. Each batch will spend two weeks in each posting (except in Gynae. & Obs. where each posting will be of one week and then swap to other unit).  Each two week training will comprise of eight working days and with a daily posting of 2 hours. This will make a total of 16 hours spend in each posting.
 

Clinical Teaching

The third year MBBS class will be taught clinical skills during these postings. The skills to be learnt in each posting will be clearly identified and according to the schedule. The clinical tutor will be clearly identified for the whole year in advance and will be responsible for the tasks allotted for the whole year.

In case of local holiday or unforeseen circumstances the remaining clinical tasks will remain the responsibility of the clinical tutor and must be covered after hours before the end of the posting .
 

Assessment

The TOACS (Task Oriented Assessment of Clinical Skills) type assessment will be conducted at the end of each posting. Students who fail the assessment will have to successfully complete it before the completion of teaching year or they may not be allowed to take the send up examination.
 

Send-up Examination

A send up examination will be conducted at the end of the teaching year. Students who have not successfully completed any of the clinical postings or laboratory work, will not be allowed to appear in the send up examination and thus unable to appear in the university examination.

The send up examination will comprise of assessment in clinical skills in addition to test of knowledge in Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology. This assessment of clinical skills will be TOACS variety.
 

Second Professional
MBBS Examination.

An exam will be conducted by the university at the end of the teaching year in subjects of Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine & General Pathology. 

This exam will comprise of essay and  viva-voce.

The tenure of fourth year MBBS is 33 weeks of both basic & clinical teaching.  Students will spend 3 hours and 30 minutes each day in wards 4 days a week.  On Fridays, it is mandatory for students to attend Clinico Pathological Conference, there will be no ward class on Fridays.
 

Lectures

The lectures schedule will be for 33 weeks. The lectures to be delivered during the year will be clearly identified.
 

Blocks
